Chapter Watch - Sitiawan Chapter
By Dr. Chua Wan Tiong, President

< Previous, > Next

Sitiawan is a town rich in Christian heritage. The founding fathers signed a formal treaty with the then British Resident for the town to be "opium, gambling and alcohol free". The great Chinese evangelist Dr. John Sung laid a strong foundation when he visited Sitiawan twice in the forties. Watchman Nee was another great Chinese evangelist to visit the town.

Sitiawan, which now has about 29 congregations, gave birth to many of the current Christian leaders in Malaysia and Singapore.

The establishment of the Naval Base in Lumut and the opening of the new township of Seri Manjung brought along an influx of people to this once conservative town. The Christian influence was so strong that no bars or massage parlour was allowed to operate in the early days.

The pioneering work of the FGBMF in Sitiawan was initiated by Major Goh Han Sen in the early eighties. Major Goh and his team were instrumental in holding many FGBMF banquets that stirred the flame of renewal and zeal on evangelism. The contribution of this dynamic young man, the son-in-law of a servant of the Lord, was however cut short when he was transferred to Kuala Lumpur.

But Major Goh's labour was not in vain. The Sitiawan Chapter of the FGBMF was formally chartered on 1 December, 1987 with Dr Chua Wan Tiong as the first president. He was assisted by Bro Nga Hock Cheh, Bro Mah Ah Hing and Bro Bernard Chong.

The Chapter soon came out with a battle-cry "Taking Manjung for Christ" to mobilize the town to recover and restore the lost heritage. The activities of the Chapter did stir "the sleeping beauty" or "slumbering bride". Banquet meetings marked with miracles and deliverance were held on a regular basis. Many anointed servants of God like Rev. Roy Durman, Rev. Joyce Still, Rev. Colin Urquhart and a host of others ministered under the power of the Holy Spirit. Many lives were won for Jesus Christ. The people (including the Christians) witnessed again the reality and power of Jesus Christ as the Messiah of mankind.

In response to prayers, the Lord caused several Chinese-speaking brothers to join the Chapter. Towards the end of 2001 the membership grew to 20. The Chapter was a beneficiary of the Chinese Convention. The Chapter is now poised to do greater things for Jesus the Master in the coming seasons. Praise the Lord.

To encourage one another, the members together with their spouses get together periodically for a meal fellowship. The Chapter intends to increase the number of dinner meetings as well as introducing the Mini Banquet meetings.

Events to come:

8 March Evangelistic Rally with Rev Raymond Mooi.
20 March Banquet dinner with Rev Wong Ming Tah as speaker.

A mid-year banquet dinner with FGB Ipoh Chinese Chapters where brothers will share their personal testimonies.

General details: Launched in 1987; meets 8pm every Monday for prayer meeting; President: Dr Chua Wan Tiong
