Over the years, FGBMF
Malaysia had often been the fellowship place of Christian leaders. Many
are now serving as pastors, elders, deacons or other positions of
leaderships. One such leader is Dr Chew Weng Chee, a former Consultant
Obstetrician and Gynaecologist before he gave up his medical profession to
become a full-time servant of the Lord in 1999 as the Senior Pastor of SIB
KL and was interviewed by the Flame recently.
Q: Dr Chew, may I know
what led you and how you were involved in the early days of FGBMF?
A: I was very involved in
the early days of FGBMF, especially with the start of FGBMF in Sabah. I
was the President of the 1st chapter in Sabah at Kota Kinabalu in the
early 80's and was given the privilege to host and organize the 1st
Malaysian FGBMF Conference in Kota Kinabalu in 1989. I remember very
distinctly flying over to Tawau with Bro. Abraham Peter Tong, Bro. Lee Gee
Koon and the late Bro. Timothy Phua to start the chapter in Tawau. Those
were really exciting days!
Q: Can you compare the
spiritual climate then and now?
A: It's different. Those
were pioneering days when FGBMF was still relatively new in Malaysia. The
vision of our founder, Demos Shakarian was burning bright and sweeping
swiftly across the region. Singapore's FGBMF was on a high note at that
time as it took the lead then. Today, the FGBMF has consolidated with so
many more chapters formed and established throughout West and East
Malaysia. Now, the focus has shifted to Malaysia and the Chinese FGBMF has
come up very strongly now. At that time there were no Chinese FGBMF yet.
So, in these ways, the spiritual climate has changed but still as highly
charged as before.
Q: You certainly have
fond memories of FGBMF Malaysia. Would you kindly share them with us?
A: It was through my
association with FGBMF in the early days that I was filled with the Holy
Spirit and Bro. Abraham (Peter) Tong was pivotal to this crucial part of my
spiritual journey. I consider him as one of my spiritual mentors. I have
fond memories of the high octave National FGBMF Conventions in Singapore
and Malaysia then. I really miss them. I wish they could be revived again.
Q: What are your views
on FGBMF's progress over the recent years?
A: The FGBMF was riding on
a top of a huge wave of the Holy Spirit in the eighties. Then for some
reason or other, it dipped for several years. Now, a new wave is rising.
It is picking up strength again. But, I sense that it is now at a crucial
stage. To become a spiritual tsunami, the leadership must be more forward
looking. If not, it may take a dip again.
Q: Lastly, what would be
your passing words to the current FGBMF members?
A: Even though my present
involvement with FGBMF is small as compared to the past, my heart is
always with the movement. It is a movement birthed by God and given the
right and favourable spiritual climate existing now in Malaysia, I believe
that it is time for FGBMF Malaysia to rise up even higher to reach tsunami
status.
My passing words to current
FGBMF members are taken from John 9:4, when Jesus says, "As long as
it is day, we must do the work of Him who sent me. Night is coming, when
no one can work." So while it is still day, friends, let's all rise
up and work for the cause of the Kingdom of God. |
