As a corporate trainer, I am always on the lookout for good books on leadership and human behavior and when I read the book ” Living and leading with limitations”, I knew this book fits the bill.

Rev Wong Kim Kong’s books is one of those which once you start reading it, you find it hard to put it down until you have finished reading it. And I am pleased to report that I did it in one sitting although it took me till the wee hours of the morning!

Rev Wong’s account of his early childhood struck a chord with me as my early childhood experiences were also somewhat similar. I could identify with him and feel his disappointment, shame and hopelessness. But it was thankfully not a sad story all the way because he then began to tell us of his success in gaining admission to the top university in the country and how some kind souls lent their helping hands and encouraged him to study and pass his examinations. He also related how he was able to woo the woman of his dreams although at that time, he thought it would be quite impossible, in view of his disability.

He related how he met God when some believers took him to some Christian meetings and how his life was transformed when the truth was revealed to him. His decision to follow Christ was the turning point in his life.. Before everything was hopeless and dark but now, the light of the gospel illuminated his life. He found new meaning in life and as he trusted God, doors of opportunity were opened for him..

Having met God, his spiritual life was transformed. He now desired to be consecrated and separated for the Master’s use. He now wanted to be a leader so that others who have limitations may follow suit. His first attempts in leadership were nurtured in a pioneering work in Rawang, a small town in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. Later, he was involved in Malaysian Care, a Christian organization which ministers to the poor and needy, irrespective of race and religion, The experiences from these ministries helped Rev Wong to prepare himself for responsibilities in the future.

Rev Wong bared his soul in this book, narrating to us the difficult times and struggles he went through in his ministry, as well as in his marriage. . His humility and faith in God, demonstrated in his frank admission of his failings and his willingness to accept and abide by Godly counsel, should be emulated by all Christians, especially leaders.

Another significant milestone was etched in Rev Wong’s life in 1996, when after much soul searching and seeking the face of God, he accepted the post of Secretary General, offered to him by the Council of the National Evangelical Christian Fellowship (NECF) Malaysia. We cannot help but marvel at the fact that a person with a disability such as Rev Wong’s could rise to such a high position in the Christian fraternity. Truly this is further testimony to God’s glory and greatness, evident in Rev Wong’s life, when it is submitted to His divine will and purposes.

In summary, if you want to read a good and practical book on leadership, courage and perseverance in the face of adversity, not to quit when the chips are down, then this book. is for you. You will be encouraged and challenged to be the kind of leader that will inspire others to ” soar like the eagles” !
